'Tis the season for good soups
Ecclesiastes had it right -- to everything there is a season. In December, I love being a 24-hour party person, but by January, I'm ready to cuddle up with a nice bowl of soup...
...Fantastic World Foods has 16 new instant soup cups (5 ounces, $2.19) embracing flavors from around the world, including Buckaroo Bean Chili. Buckaroo is not a region in Italy, but hey, beans are beans. The tomato-based broth is thin and bland, the pinto beans and veggies are freeze-dried and the textured soy protein bits have a rubbery chew. Each cup has 160 calories, 2 grams fat and, like many instant soups, is loaded with sodium -- 720 mg.
But there's good news, buckaroos. Fantastic World's bean soup is vegan, gluten-free and offers more fiber and protein (10 and 12 grams respectively) than Amy's and Moosewood. That's reason enough to boil water.
